From University to Tax at EY Galway

In May 2017 I finished college with an Accounting degree with no idea where I wanted to go next. When I saw EY were looking for a Tax graduate in their new Galway office I decided to apply and luckily I haven’t looked back since.

From day one in EY Galway the atmosphere was friendly, welcoming and somewhere I immediately felt comfortable. As the office is small it’s easy to get to know everyone and make great friends. We have a fresh, new office space with hard working staff who are always up for some fun! This made the transition from college to work life a breeze.

The beauty of working in tax in EY Galway is the small team. This gives us the opportunity to gain exposure to many different areas of tax. As a result, no two days are the same and we are constantly improving and building upon our skillsets. This variety of work also helps when studying for exams. Everyone is so approachable, regardless of their position, and always willing to help and share their knowledge.

For many, including myself, working for one of the Big Four may seem daunting at first but I can assure you that the atmosphere in EY Galway is incredible. You are given an excellent opportunity to learn and be a part of a great team. At career fairs I attended throughout the year it seemed that a major fear faced by students, which I also worried about, was that you were expected to know everything from day one, but this is certainly not the case. EY places major emphasis on internal training both on the job and for exam preparation. Some training days are even held in Dublin, giving us a chance to meet up with graduates from the other EY offices around the country. In addition to this, EY give very generous paid study leave which helps to alleviate stress around exam time.

My advice for anyone considering joining the Tax team in EY Galway would be to go for it! You will be joining a tremendous team, you will gain new skills and will have great fun along the way.
