Volunteering with the Peter McVerry Trust

On Friday 31st March 2017 the Recruitment team donned their yellow EY hoodies and wellies and made the trip to Naul, Co. Dublin to spend the day volunteering at the Peter McVerry Residential Detox Centre.

On arrival we received a warm welcome and an introduction into the work of the Trust and the Detox Centre before heading outside with a horticulturist for a day of activities. Over the course of the day we worked closed with the staff and clients of the Centre. We helped erect a fence and put the finishing touches to a new enclosure for two of the pigs living on the land. After lunch we moved onto tree planting and orchard maintenance. Some of the team were planting and harvesting vegetables while the others were mucking out the ponies’ and the alpaca’s sheds and preparing their dinner!

It was great to chat with the clients and share stories, whilst also seeing very tangible results of our combined efforts at the end of the day.

Caroline McAniff, Head of EY Recruitment “Spending time with the people at the Peter McVerry Trust Residential Detox Centre was an amazing experience.  We all rolled up our sleeves, donned our gardening gloves and got some work done erecting fences, planting trees, looking after the animals and weeding.  This was very different to a normal day in the office and everyone really enjoyed it.  We were touched by the stories of the residents and felt like we were giving a little back by spending time working alongside them.  It was a special place that felt good for the soul and we were fortunate to spend the day there.  We have another CSR day each to use this year so plans are underway for the next one.”

The Recruitment Team's thoughts;

“It was a thoroughly enjoyable and rewarding afternoon and it was nice to see the team working together in a very different environment.”

“It was great to actually get out and help a charity and see the small difference you can make, rather than just putting some money in a donation box”.

“Excellent day with Peter McVerry Trust. Brilliant initiative, some hard work grafting on the farm but very self-rewarding to meet, talk to and share with the residents currently staying there.”

“I really enjoyed the CSR day, it was great to see the kindness of my colleagues and I learned some skills that I will take away with me”

"The day was really worthwhile as the work was enjoyable and it was good to spend a day out of the office with my team for a change. It was also really interesting to meet the people involved with the charity and learn about the work they are doing to treat addiction, and hear about the types of services that are out there."
